Laughter is the Best Medicine

We have all heard that sometimes, laughter can be the best medicine. At Daughter for Hire, we believe that this is especially true for our senior population. We can think of no better way to help brighten the day of our senior loved-ones by inserting a little laughter into their lives.

We have come to know that social interaction plays a key role in a longer lifespan and good overall health in many senior citizens. Frequent human interaction gives everyone the potential for more amusement and joy in their lives and very often comes in the form of laughter.

Laughter can produce some amazing health benefits.

Laughter Supports the Immune System

Laughter can help protect your immune system and ward off serious illness by releasing neuropeptides that help fight stress.

Laughter Promotes Better Sleep

Stress, pain and worry are some of the leading causes of sleeplessness. Laughter during the day can help alleviate all three of these, promoting more sound sleep at night.

Laughter Can Improve Blood Pressure

Many times, stress can cause blood pressure to reach a dangerous level. Laughter has been shown to improve blood vessels and foster better blood flow.

Laughter Stimulates Organs

When you laugh, your body takes in more oxygen-rich air, which naturally stimulates organs like your heart, lungs, muscles and brain.

Laughter Releases Endorphins

These feel-good chemicals are important for reducing stress and pain, creates pathways to building social bonds between humans and instills a sense of calm that fosters feelings of togetherness.

In closing, have you heard the one about the retired man who volunteers to entertain patients in assisted living homes and hospitals? He visited a hospital in Brooklyn and brought along his portable keyboard. After telling jokes and singing songs at patients’ bedsides, he said farewell and, “I hope you get better.” One elderly gentleman replied back, “I hope you get better, too.”
